The National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change has been approved

January 2024

The Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has announced theapproval of the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan (PNACC).
The main objective of the PNACC is to provide national guidance for the implementation of actions aimed at minimizing risks from climate change, improving the adaptive capacity of natural, social and economic systems as well as taking advantage of any opportunities that may arise with new climate conditions.
The PNACC includes a cognitive framework on climate and climate change impacts in Italy, outlines actions and strategies for adaptation, and establishes a national governance structure.
Methodologies are also proposed for the definition of adaptation strategies and plans at regional and local level.

Winter tourism and climate change in the Italian Alps: a study analyzes the relationship between tourist flows and meteorological conditions, and provides an estimate of the potential losses for the sector

February 2023

The study, published in the Bank of Italy's Questioni di Economia e Finanza series, uses an econometric model to analyze the relationship between snowfall, ski lift use and tourist stays in 39 Italian alpine resorts over the past two decades.
The results indicate a positive and significant relationship between snowfall and winter tourist flows. Based on the main meteorological projections available, in the coming years climate change could have significant effects on the number of ski passes sold in the ski areas and on overnight stays in Alpine resorts, especially at lower altitudes. Artificial snowmaking would not be sufficient to sustain tourist flows, and it seems appropriate to think about other adaptation strategies as well.

Ozone2

Let's start 2023 with good news:
The ozone layer is on track to recover its integrity within four decades, contributing positively to efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.

9 January 2023

The quadriennial assesement report released by Scientific Panel of the Montreal Protocol, confirms the phase-out of almost 99% of banned substances.
This contributes to the preservation of the ozone layer in the upper stratosphere with a consequent reduction in human exposure to harmful ultraviolet radiation.
If current policies remain in place, the ozone layer is expected to return to 1980 values (before the hole appeared) by 2066 for the Antarctic, by 2045 for the Arctic and by 2040 for the rest of the world.
The effects will also be positive on the climate front, because within the framework of the Protocol in addition to the ban on ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) the phasing out of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which have a strong greenhouse effect, is also planned.

The Municipality of Brescia and the Politecnico di Milano (CCRR-Lab) signed the agreement for drafting the strategy for the diffusion of green roofs and for urban depaving plan.

maggio 2022 – Brescia

The Municipality of Brescia has entrusted the CCRR-Lab of the Politecnico di Milano with consultancy for the Strategy of diffusion of green roofs and the Implementation Plan for urban depaving. These tools will make it possible to give a strong impetus to the implementation of integrated and widespread interventions of mitigation and of adaption to climate change. The consultancy is part of the planning activities aimed at implementing the Brescia climate transition strategy. This activity has three major objectives. The first intends to classify the public and private roofs of the city by levels of suitability for the construction of green roofs and publicly owned paved areas by levels of suitability for de-paving.  The second aims to quantify the potential for intervention over time in order to understand the effectiveness of green roofs and depaving on improving climate comfort and reducing flooding. The third aims at attributing, for the areas deemed most suitable, the types and criteria of intervention and the related parametric costs.

News and studies on the changing climate

may 2022

Climalteranti is an information and discussion site/blog on the topic of climate change online since 2008 which aims to be a reference point for finding information about climate change and a space for discussion on Italian climate policies. Thanks to the contribution of a scientific committee made up of members who belong to the academic world, the professions and journalism, the site manages to combine a militant approach with the rigor of the contributions and the quality of the documentation provided.
It is known, among other things, for hosting the "Some Like it Hot" prize, awarded annually to the Italian person or organization that has distinguished itself in spreading incorrect arguments and news on the phenomenology of climate change and on its impacts, and on the costs and benefits of mitigation measures.

FORTY YEARS AGO WAS ESTABLISHED CONOU, THE FIRST ENTITY IN ITALY MEANT TO IMPLEMENT A SEPARATE COLLECTION OF USED LUBRICANT OIL

may 2022

In the first year of activity, the consortium collected about 50 thousand tons of used lubricants, then the quantities increased to reach 187 thousand tons of oil collected in 2018 with the production of 123 thousand tons of regenerated base oil. It is an example of a realized circular economy, an authentic Italian and European primacy: almost 100% of the oil used - double the European average - is in fact regenerated and becomes new base oil). This means savings in energy bills, in water and soil consumption and in CO2 emissions.

THE SYMBIOSIS PLATFORM, DEVELOPED BY ENEA, HAS THE OBJECTIVE OF CREATING NETWORKS AND MECHANISMS OF INDUSTRIAL SYMBIOSIS

may 2022

The Laboratory for the Enhancement of Resources in Productive and Territorial Systems (RISE) of the SSPT Department of ENEA has been managing for some years the Symbiosis platform, in which numerous experiences of industrial symbiosis are reported.
RISE's many years of experience on issues relating to efficiency in the use of resources is made available to the PA and to companies through the development, qualification and dissemination of advanced methods and techniques in the field of industrial activities. In fact, the efficiency with which the resources are used is very low and the pollution associated with emissions that occur throughout the life cycle of the products is still too high. In this regard, the goal of increasing industrial symbiosis through the transfer of resources, such as materials (by-products or waste), energy waste, services and skills, between two or more dissimilar industries has recently been identified.

webinar: Cities' commitment to climate neutrality

7 Aprile 2022 – 10:00/12:00 AM – Online event

New EU targets aim to achieve a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of at least 55% below 1990 levels by 2030 and to be climate neutral by 2050. Italy is committed to implement these objectives on a national level. Without a greater involvement of cities, it won't be possible to implement this demanding decarbonisation path towards climate neutrality.⁵
